A Poem: Holy Pause

Is all life lived beyond the fence?
At the extent of our limits.

Or is there worth in stillness,
the holy pause between breaths.

I wonder if God speaks

as much in the space between speech,
as in the framed word.

The pause between the Tui’s notes
make up its song,

the heart rests between beats
to ensures its steady pumping,

and our lungs empty and fill
in response to the breaths we draw.

What might happen if we hushed our voices
and listened?

Might we then hear
all the things we have missed,

even those things for which silence
is a language.

If we resist spending time in rest,
might we consider

how a minute can be stretched
when given due attention.

Resting is not so much
wasting a moment

as perhaps taking the time
to fully unwrap it.

    1. Dear Linda, thank you so very much for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it and am thankful the poem spoke to you. I wrote it when sitting on the deck recovering from a vertigo attack and I remember thinking what a message for life this is for all of us xx
