Written daily for my colleagues, to encourage a reflective space during the work day, these reflections and prayers will also be posted here from time to time.
“Do not be angry that you cannot make others as you would wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.”
Thomas à Kempis
“Stop trying to make everyone happy. You aren’t chocolate.”
“If you look for perfection you will never be satisfied.”
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.”
MY PRAYER today is peace, calm under pressure, peace under strain. A card fell out of my bag this afternoon just as I was feeling wound up by the frustrations of living. On it was the bible verse, ‘Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.’ As a mum, an employee, a wife, a friend, a daughter, sometimes I feel I have to be so accommodating and flexible that I’m stretched thin to snapping. Part of that is my own carrying of tension. I guess anything held tense for too long eventually snaps, so we need to intentionally take our hands off our problems. ‘Let go and let God’ as they say. Letting go does not mean not assuming responsibility, but allowing ourselves to be guided by God; often a decision against our human inclinations, which is to fix things ourselves. Today this word ‘Commit’ jumped out at me. We commit it to him, we pass it over. We give up the right to continue to feel worried, conflicted, annoyed. We leave it in his hands, and whether we have succeeded or failed we have kept our peace. And is not self-mastery the greatest success of all?
