“And He watched over me before I knew Him and before I learned sense or even distinguished between good and evil.”
St. Patrick
“For however devoted you are to God, you may be sure that he is immeasurably more devoted to you.”
Meister Eckhart
“The Lord watches over you– the Lord is your shade at your right hand…”
Psalm 121:5
My Prayer today is for assurance. Bernie Dymet from ‘A Different Perspective’, spoke on the radio today about the window that God has into our lives. He asked us to consider how we thought God viewed us. Whether the view in which he saw us was a restricted and rigid one, through a small and narrow window? Or whether, if God is who he says he is, that that window might be as large and wide and as expansive as the heavens, stretching as far as I eye can see. His words had me remembering the evening before, when well after midnight I stood on a deck in the midst of the countryside, craning my neck to look up at a pitch black sky and stars shining out like jewels. The expanse of dark and light, made me feel so small, and my circumstances almost of no consequence in the large scheme of things, in the great caravan of time and history in which those same stars hung, many burnt out before my eye perceived them. And yet I also felt comfort in the thought of a universe that enfolds our humanity, as we hang in space, and awestruck by the knowledge of such a majestic God caring for each of us.
This window that God sees us through is not a literal universe, for he is as much in us as without us, but it’s a profound parallel, and reminders us that in fact his window, just like the universe, is wider and deeper and higher than any we can comtemplate; and just as he has placed all the stars in space, in their birthing and their dying, so he has interweaved his goodness and his blessing along our way, for us to discover on the path.
(After listening to Bernie, I heard this beautiful song)
The Maker
Chris August
I see You in the sunrise
I see You in the rain
I see You in the laughter
I feel You through the pain
Everything that You have made is beautiful
Oh, my God, I can’t believe my eyes
But in all of this to think that You would think of me
Makes my heart come alive
Your love is like a mighty fire deep inside my bones
I feel like I could climb a thousand mountains all at once
And I never have to wonder if somebody cares for me
I love the Maker
And the Maker loves me
And the Maker loves me
I see You, You are creation
I see the grandness of Your majesty
The universe is singing all Your glory
I can’t believe You live inside of me…
These are drawn from daily prayers and reflections I write for my Chaplaincy colleagues.
