A Poem: The Rarest Thing

May my voice resound,

with the writers, the poets, the philosophers,
the artists, and makers of moments.

To the Oscar Wilde’s who have said,
‘to live is the rarest thing…’.

To the children who laugh at their onset,
and the cicadas who finish with song.

May my voice lift,

may it ripple out and resonate,
with delight, deep content.

To live is the rarest thing,

just one in a few billion,
at this brief juncture in time.

May God save us from existence
like the cicadas underground.

May we sing as those who have
not long to live,

and risk to lose it all
too soon.

“……which causes me to wonder, my own purpose on so many days as humble as the spider’s, what is beautiful that I make? What is elegant? What feeds the world?”
– Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum

“To live is the rarest thing in the world, most people exist that is all.”
– Oscare Wilde
