A Poem: Can We

Can we do this,

can we take off our shoes
in the presence of another,

can we feel our bare feet
walk the imprint of their steps.

Can we feel their experience
ring through our tendons,

tinge our blood.

Can we touch the holy
through each other.

Can we do this,

can we remove
the calluses from our palms,

rub the dry parts smooth
that they might with delicate touch

perceive the vulnerable parts
with gentle pressure.

Can we touch the holy
in each other.

Can we do this,

can we take off our lenses
in the naked gaze of another.

Can we release all preconceptions
and prior judgements,

can we receive the meanings
fluent in tears, or unspoken need.

Can we be moved by the holy
in each other.

Can we take off
our shoes.
