A Poem: Brighter

I have woken up and the sun is brighter
than bright.

How can that be,
or is it that that my eyes are cleansed?

And the kowhai tree has suddenly bloomed.

Or is it, I just didn’t see it yesterday?

And the birds are louder,
next door’s cat more brazen in his venturing.

The children happier,

for no-one greets a day more new
than the young.

And everything is slightly more adjacent,

my body responding
that if this is healing I am all in.

Take me now Heaven
and spin me round,

put me back on my feet,
all the pieces meeting again.

Ah, hope is this multi-faceted thing
like the sun blooming in the sky in every direction,

capturing the kowhai
that the yellow from yesterday might now be seen.

Yes, is not hope something like
curtains opening,

and the day arriving brighter than bright?

Like someone singing in ears
now attuned to sound,

‘Good’ morning!

‘My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”
