A Poem: Silence as Bread

When this is over

will we withdraw from the silence
as a lover, sated,
climbs from bed.

Will we have had enough quiet
that we excuse ourselves, as diners
from a table over-full.

Will we chase everything we had left,
thirsty again,
or will we,

in the midst of gathering,
carry silence like a stone,
a treasure deep, settled.

Will we have let silence turn
from something separate
to a welcomed friend,

to whom we have made space,
broken bread.

  1. Profound questions with no specific answers as yet. Perhaps the answers will be as unique and varied as we are. And maybe the silence will finally feel more like an invitation to a sacred space than a dreaded thing from which we seek any form of escape. I hope so… 💜
